Places of worship in Mumbai

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

In a previous post I mentioned visiting a church that is known for  its unusual wax figurines to burn for sickness and health. And that I bought some myself. Well, here they are, along with some other religious paraphernalia that I bought. The heart is for my mum, who has heart problems, the jaw with teeth is for a girlfriend with jaw problems and the woman figurine is for the health of all my girlfriends.

The city is full with places of worship. Temples, churches, mosques, altars, whatever...
Walking through the city we saw lots of them and went in some of them.

Here is a selection:

This temple was very unusual. 200 years old and completely in marble with gorgeous carvings. Ceilings with glass mosaics. Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pics, so we only have some sneaky shot;-):

Right next door was another temple, in a totally different style. There was a celebration going on and we were received as old friends. Although very unpolite, we refused the offer to join in for lunch there.

Ofcourse there are lots of mosques with their characteristic minarets.

This temple, the Mumba Devi temple, is very popular. When we were there is was extremely crowded. In the end we somehow both ended up with a red dot on our foreheads;-).

Everywhere are small places of worship in the city:

And more temples:

This mosque is famous. It lies on an island, connected by a low tide path to the shore. We may visit it next weekend.

And more temples and mosques:

There are elephants;-):

And (for us) mysterious 'towers':

Here ends our Mumbai worship tour, folks, for now that is;-).
